The great stone balanced there like the last thought of a forgotten world, hanging upon the earth by the smallest touch, as if one whisper from the stars might send it drifting loose into the dark. Around the broken rocks, soft grasses spread in quiet patches, tender and green against the cold bones of the planet, strange as a summer memory carried into space.
Above it all, the night opened wide and endless, crowded with millions of bright-burning stars that seemed close enough to gather by the handful. Behind the towering rock, clouds of green and yellow and pale pink floated upward through the black sky like colored dreams dissolving in slow motion, and the silent world waited beneath them, old and lonely and full of secrets no living thing had yet spoken aloud.
