The great stone arch rose from the lonely planet like the gate to some ancient and sleeping kingdom, its jagged edges reaching upward into the star-filled dark. Time and silence seemed to live inside the rock itself, and beneath its shadow the smooth green grass spread softly among the broken stone, gentle as moss growing over an old forgotten dream.
Above the arch, the heavens blazed with countless stars, sharp and bright in the airless night. Clouds of green and blue and pale yellow drifted upward behind the towering gateway like colored fire rising slowly through water, and the whole strange world seemed caught between wonder and loneliness, waiting quietly beneath the endless turning of the universe.
