The evening sky burned like the last sweet sip of summer preserved in a glass jar, all gold and orange and deep ember-red melting together above the smoky mountain ridges. The clouds drifted slowly across it, bright as lantern smoke, while the evergreens stood in quiet rows, catching fire at their edges where the sunset touched them.
Beyond the trees, the waterfall came tumbling down the mountainside in silver ribbons, gathering the fading light and carrying it into the river below. The water wandered forward like a living thing remembering its way home, winding between towering pines washed in copper and amber glow. The whole wilderness seemed to hold its breath in the final warm minutes before nightfall.
