Beyond the dark line of the pines, the waterfall came down out of the mountains steady and white, catching the soft light of the late afternoon sky. At the place where the falling water struck the river, a pale mist rose slowly and drifted through the trees, soft as breath in the cold air. The river moved from it slow and certain, bending through the evergreens that stood along the banks like old watchers who had seen many winters come. Dark shadows settled over the land and the cold seemed to rise gently from the water itself, until the whole valley grew quiet in that lonely way wild places do after the day is gone.
